Day 1 - Reflection

“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.  Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”  Matthew 6:3-4

Why do you give?  Is it because you have abundance and want to share?  Is it because you see a need and want to help?  Is it because it makes you feel good?  Or, is it because you want recognition?  Depending on the day of the week, or the mission or ministry, it may be any one or all of the above for me.

Who doesn’t want credit for doing something wonderful?  We all like recognition.  When I make my gift to my University, I am conscious of the giving level and what it will bring me:  better seats, or parking, or recognition in some giving club.

Our church does not have giving clubs.  We all belong to the community of Christ, and our reward is to support the mission of the community to the best of our abilities.

If you are reading this, you are most likely a supporting member of Emmanuel and you care about our parish, our clergy and staff, and the work we do in Christ’s name.  As you think about what you are able to give or pledge for this coming year, please ask yourself who you are serving.

Christ teaches us that we are to be God-centered, not self-centered.
